Planning a road trip this fall? As more people are hitting the road, plastics are helping to make those trips more fun! Plastics Make it Possible® travel correspondent and blogger Stephanie Sheaffer of Metropolitan Mama has been travelling across the country with her family and decided to take plastics along for the ride. She’s learned that plastic innovations can help you and your family get the most out of your summer road trip in ways you can see, like resealable plastic bags and containers that help keep your road snacks fresher longer and with portion control, and in ways that aren’t so obvious, like decreasing car weight in car parts like door panels and bumpers, which saves gas.
So tell us:
How have plastics helped make your road trips possible?
Leave a comment below to share how plastics have made your summer road trip possible for a chance to win the ultimate road trip prize package valued at $250. One winner will be randomly selected from all entries. The prize package includes a shatter resistant plastic picnic set backpack, go-anywhere plastic polyester chairs, plastic vacuum space-saver bags, large collapsible plastic cooler, $50 gas card and more.

Its needed for the cooler we take
Plastic saves our sanity! Without a doubt, if we didn’t use plastic containers and bags to store and organize the items for the kids on our car trips, things would be a huge mess! We pack each of our 2 kids a “goodie container” in a plastic tote, and it includes snacks, small toys, crayons & paper, etc. And actually, several of those items are also stored in their own plastic baggie.
We also keep a larger plastic tote in the trunk, and we keep water bottles, extra travel pillows, blankies, snacks, etc.

From plastic bags containing snacks to refillable water bottles; plastic containers to keep food fresh and protect our belongings and plastic toys/games to keep everyone occupied so that no one gets bored. We also use plastic for our toiletries (toothbrush holders, soap dish, etc). If we go to the beautiful Oregon coast, we take a plastic bucket and pail to play on the sand and in/with the water. The list goes on…I can’t imagine a day when I’m not using plastics for something! Thanks for the giveaway.
Please note: I wrote a comment last night, but then we lost our Internet service. Because I don’t see it posted here, I’ll submit another comment (and hope it’s not a duplicate).
Granted most of my car is plastic- but, I couldn’t cram the luggage of teenager & the little one in-without those plastic bags that reduce the 10 seeming TONS of clothing, down to a mere few feet in the trunk of the Prius. Unloading it’s like they brought the entire closet with them- though admittedly, it’s possible teenager did!
In between- no trip is complete without plastic drinking bottles to fill with water, because soda will never do when they are saddled to the car for hours.
Sunglasses made of plastic for the entire family starts off any road trip, plastic snack bowls for the car, our plastic water bottles, a plastic trash bag………

We always have two ice chests. A small one for inside the car and a large one for our groceries we take into the hotel.
It might sound gross but when you have to go pee and the driver doesn’t want to stop the car having an empty plastic bottle of anything helps you feel relieved and comfortable while the driver gets to stay on schedule. That is unless your female but I would think any driver would stop for a female to go to the restroom.
Plastics make our family vacations possible. We love to take old-fashioned car trips with our family. Traveling long distances would be a lot more difficult without the use of plastics. We use a cargo carrier to fit all the luggage we need and a cooler to keeps drinks cold so we can stay hydrated. Plastic bags hold the snacks to keep us going during those long drives. The plastic in the car seats help keep my children safe. The cell phones that help us keep in touch with family while we are gone are made of plastic. And who can forget the plastic in the portable DVD players? Keeping our children occupied during the trip keeps us sane until we arrive at our destination. Plastic rocks!

Number one is reusable plastic water bottles! Saved us a lot of money to not have to buy drinks at every stop along a long road trip.

I bought little plastic desks for my kids to use on our road trip. They filled them up with toys and craft stuff. Kept them very busy!
I take my plastic reusable BPA free bottle with me when I travel to save money on having to purchase water at the airport and also to be earth-friendly.
The plastic water bladder and tubing in my CamelBack will be a life saver when I’m walking 60 miles in 3 days in the Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure next month. It’s been great training with it this summer! Between this and packing everything in Ziploc plastic bags, I am set for the walk and the weather!

THIS IS AWESOME!!
I have three young kids- so plastics are in pretty much everything we take with us. From their travel beds, to their car seats- yep= plastics do it!
Plastic tarps are used for everything from ground cover to protecting gear, to shelter when we travel in the mountains.
For road trips we use plastic space savers for sleeping bags and coats. Out ice chests are full of food in baggies to keep separate and fresh. We have a plastic dirty laundry bag that is seal-able, as well as seal-able bags for all computer components and cameras. Can’t live without plastics.
Without plastic bags, I don’t think a trip would be as manageable for my family to take. We use plastic bags of all sizes to contain our toiletries, electronics (cameras, phones, etc.), toys, food, beverages, and even dirty laundry.

I put all my food in plastics when I leave home.
I mused plastic containers to separate items packed for travel. Plastic bags are great as well.
Plastic water bottles and a plastic cooler. Plastic food containers to keep the lunch items cold and fresh in the cooler.
Plastics are versatile and for the most part sturdy enough to last through air and car travel, in the tote and back pack, and many reuses. We refill plastic water bottles, pack lunches in plastic tubs and bags, and always have plastic bags on hand to handle soiled and wet clothes and towels. Recalling how we used glass bottles, which one slip would emit big OH NOs!, travel with plastic is essential.
Thumbs up!
Plastics have allowed my family to reduce our consumable waste. We have color coded plastic items that we use for everything from food storage to toys.
It makes it so much easier to eat and not have a huge mess. In the summertime with everyone always cooking on the grill it is the only way to eat.

Plastics allow us to keep our kids food separate and fresh – with one kid with allergies this is a must!
This summer, my family took two separate driving trips that took us all the way up and down the entire east coast. We drove from North Carolina to New Brunswick, Canada to visit my in-laws. Then we drove back to NC and took a week to regroup. I then piled the girls into the car and we drove down to Central Florida to visit my parents. Each trip was 3 weeks long. In order to save on gas, we took our smaller car. There is no way we could have fit everything we needed into our tiny trunk without the use of space saver bags. They were so helpful to have, and totally made of plastic!
Additionally, my girls wound up stealing my Kindle (made of plastic as well); they were able to read tons of books I downloaded for them, and again we saved space.
I always have a clear plastic bin in the car. I use it to organize the kids bins they bring each one gets to fill up a colored bin with there stuff. Then they can’t complain about not having something to play with. and if all else fails they can stack the plastic. It keeps bugs and water out. You never know when something is going to spill
Plastics are my best friend when traveling. I use them for snacks and storage while on the road!!

We always pack food on road trips, which includes plastic spill-proof reusable bottles for the kids drinks! I do sometimes try to think what life was like before plastic. Hard to fathom. My 4 year old will say “It won’t break, its not glass, its plax-tik.”
Roadtrips with small children are like saffaries – there may not be wild carnivorous animals – but a car load of 4 & 8 yr olds become ravinous and unsettled pretty quickly. Enter plastics – ziploack baggies of snacks and spill proof drink containers quickly diffuse the savage beasts. Reusable coffee mugs calm the frazzled parents.
Leak proof containers hold lunches, soiled boots and clothing. With plastics the sky is really limitless.
plastic containers to keep PB&J and tuna sandwiches fresh and the car smell free!

We travel alot with grandchildren 4 and under. We carry plastic cups and plastic silverware with us always. Then when the kids get hungry or thirsty we can stop anywhere and let them have food or a drink. We have been able to avoid fussy kids this way. Also we use plastic sheeting on our seats under the car seats to keep our seats clean from all the little messes you have with small children- we just roll it up and throw it away and no mess to clean up. Plastic ziplock bags also help keep crayons and toys organzied for road trips. Must also mention that we carry extra plastic bags for quick clean up. Plastic helps us to have a somewhat stress free trip.
Plastic holds my car together! LOL Also my ice chest is made of plastic along with the containers that hold the potato salad, lunch meats, greens, tomatoes, chips, pickles, etc. Plastic spoons/forks/knives, plastic to hold steady the paper plates. I look around and see I can’t do without plastic, trips or at home.
With being handicapped, plastic is so much easier to carry things & keeps them fresh.
Thank you.
Have a fantastic day.
plastic is needed for when we go hiking, keeping drinks in, keeping food cool, storing foods, and it can be recycled
plastic rules!
Plastics make it possible to provide my kids multiple snacks on family trips
Funding my road trip wouldn’t be possible without plastic, we use our credit cards to pay for everything!
Plastic made my trip easier b/c I drink TONS of bottled water and I freeze them before a trip! I recycle them of course, also!
Thank you for the chance to win!

Plastics helped make my summer road trips possible – I had major surgery a couple of weeks before our road trip, and plastic water bottles were a lifesaver. I froze 24 of them prior to our trip – not only did they provide icy cold drinking water as they melted (VERY refreshing!) but they acted as ice packs to keep the contents of our cooler cold during the trip (one of the items in the cooler was my prescription meds).
I use plastic to pack food and drinks.
Our road trips are just across the street to the beach but we take a lot of plastic – the cooler, the water bottles, the spray bottle full of water, the containers for the sunscreen, the containers for the fresh fruit, the freezer packs and on and on. Can’t live without it.
Plastic never breaks and is lighter to carry.
no matter where or when we travel, we always seem to get stuck in traffic. we were on the way to laouisiana from virginia and outside atlanta we hit dead stop traffic. we sat for a while and just about that time we were thinking about stopping for gas, the car died, in the middle of summer! thanks goodness we had a plastic container of gas to help out in a pinch. also a plastic cooler with drinks and snacks to pass the time while we sat and waited. plastics really do make so many things we take for granted possible!
My daughters plastic pull along Dora the explorer suit case made my trip this summer.
I reuse large plastic water bottles and stack them in the freezer. When it’s time to fill the cooler, I can save money on ice and they keep everything cold. They eventually melt and then we have cold water to drink too!
our reusable water bottles
Plastic cups and bottles are a must have on road trips. I also can use bottles from home to bring water in to save money.
We freeze water bottles as well as capri suns so we can skip ice and have cold drinks in the cooler for ages.
Plastic is a life saver!
Plastic, how did we ever get along without it. I use it and wash it and reuse it. I love plastic.
Plastic helps keep food contained on a trip to let my kids snack on and to have their sippy cups
Plastic rules!
We use plastic containers for our food and drinks when we hit the road without them we would prob. have big messes thank u plastic!!
I use plastic every day for storage and organization.
We took our family of four in our fusion for a 3 week trip to FL. Our trunk spce is limited due to our child’s foldable wheelchair and medical equipment. I used plastic vacuum sealed bags as our luggage and was able to pack for all four of us for the duration without doing much laundry. fyi, we brought an airpump with reverse airflow so we didn’t need a vaccuum.
Great for everyhing
We use plastic everything,Dinnerware ,cups, bags.Taking anything else wouldn’t be good with children.
plastic tarps kept us dry during a trio of thunderstorms while we were camping this summer. DEFINITELY have to pack a lot of plastic when camping! :) We also stored our camp gear in plastic bins and tubs for easy transport and also to keep them clean!
Love the plastic luggage cover for the top of our car and of course the plastic cooler that plugs into the cigarette lighter – the plastic bags and containers that keep the food fresh – the list goes on.
We have a plastic cooler that is vital for our roadtrips and allows us to pack all our own food for the trips!
Plastics are a great asset in our RV because they’re lightweight, and can have lids which seal them up tight.

from car seats, to snack bags, to water bottles, to toys- plastic keeps us on the road very smoothly!
I love reusable plastic water bottles on trips!
Our ice chest is plastic and it keeps our water bottles (also plastic) cool for the drive :)
Love my reusable water bottles!
Plastics- aka travel boxes- make travel go much smoother as they hold things such as colring books, games, and pencils to amuse the kids while we go down the road!
Plastic is a MUST for food storage – otherwise I would waste way too much food. Also great for portability for lunches, and of course keeping those lunches cold with plastic coolers, frozen plastic water bottles and (my personal favorite!) blue ice. Plus most of it recycles, a WIN-WIN…..
Not only does it provide us with everything we need when traveling but it helps keep the essentials like medicines safe and ready to be used. Plastics are a life saver!
We use plastics everyday. We pack our lunches, drinks and snacks in plastic.
Road tripping with a toddler requires a plentiful supply of ready-to-eat snacks. Plastic makes that easy!!!
Plastics are amazingly useful. I use them daily and especially on trips from coolers filled with water and pop, to the chairs and floats to the accessories to pack our goods.
Plastic is great to store our drinks!
Let me count the ways we use plastics while we travel! For starters a good plastic cooler is a must. Inside that cooler you will find sandwiches in plastic bags, peanut butter in a plastic container, plastic silverware, and plastic bottles holding our favorite drinks. Our four kids’ carseats–plastic! Trays to play games on–you guessed it, plastic! Not to mention GPS and many safety components on the car. Without plastics, truly it would not be possible!
Versatile and makes like so much easier.
I have been biking more and love my plastic on my bike that keeps it light weight.
Plastic are important on road trips. we use small easy close bags for snacks, health and beauty items and more. Also, so many useful items are made of plastic, such as coolers, dinnerware, bottles etc..
Plastics help us make our road trips possible in a huge variety of ways but the two that immediately come to mind are:
Providing my toddler with a BPA free sippy cup
Providing my baby with bottles that enable us to extend out trips without worrying about needing to find somewhere to stop off

When it comes to road trips I am SO grateful for our plastic porta-potty, plastic ice chest, car seats, and bottles of hand sanitizer.
We have used large plastic containers to pack food and supplies for camping. We have also used small containers to store and transport food.
Plastics are truly a modern marvel!
We took a lot of platic toys with us on the road to keep the kids entertained
Love reusable plastic containers! I use them for everything! I have an Airedale that we often take on trips with us and pack her food in reusable plastic containers. I also take along an empty plastic container to use as a water dish!!
we use plastic zip-lock bags to keep snacks fresh on road trips and then to put the trash in – that helps keep the car cleaner and is easy to throw away at the next stop! I also prefer plastic to glass in the car, it’s just safer!
From the car seats that protect my children to the water bottles & plastic containers that hold their drinks & snacks – plastic is with us on all road trips! I love that plastic is reusable & recycleable too.
disposble plasticware so we don’t have to store dirty dishes, plastic bags for when my kid get carsick or for the everlasting amount of garbage or for the travel potty, the plastic in the carseat frames that keep my children safe, plastic sippy cups that keep my kids hydrated, plastic carseat protectors so my car doesn’t always smell the way it does after a roadtrip
Not only are plastics easy for my young children to carry around (without breaking!) but they also save space, help the environment, and leave me worry free!
Plastic water bottles, baggies, and coolers are what make traveling so much easier.
Although not a HUGE fan of plastic…I’m more of a naturalist. We do use quite a but of plastic…organizing with baggies is a big help, big safe car-seat, big cooler to keep food & drinks cold.
Among other things, we use plastics to pack all our healthy snacks–road food can be rough.
A plastic port a potty is a must on the road!
I couldn’t travel without plastic–refillable water bottle, space saver bags, Ziploc bags…
We take at least one( two day each way so over 1200 miles) road trip a year with the kids (4 and 12) I couldn’t imagine it without plastics. One major item I can think of are that the hardcovers on the electronics are plastic..like the i touch and i phone..even my sons ds has a great plastic covering to protect it from falls.
I am constantly hearing things being dropped in the back seat or finding things on the floor that have been stepped on, etc. We wouldn’t have these items still if it weren’t for plastics.
Couldn’t pack snacks for the kiddo without my plastic baggies!
Plastic makes it so easy to take our drinks in the car.
I couldn’t make it without snack bags for my kids, either!
We use plastic reusable containers and waterbottles. The kids sort their travel toys into baggies and containers as well. Without plastic our stuff would be a miserable jumble!
I always bring plastic bags with us on the trip. From bringing laundry home to keeping sand off things-we always find a way to use them!
I have a plastic shower tote for each kid filled with busy items – crayons, paper, wikistix. Makes time on the road easier.
Plastic bags can be used for all kinds of things. I keep them in all vechicles and take them to the local thrift store. They can be used for fish, rocks, sand, and shopping.
Never travel or take road trips without plastic bags for everything from food to toiletries! Plastics are indispensable at home and on the road!
