With more than 250 million players spanning the globe, soccer (or football as it’s known outside the U.S.) is without question the world’s most popular sport. It’s also one of the oldest – the game can be traced back to several ancient cultures, including “football” games more than 3,000 years ago in China.
Today’s die-hard soccer fans were eagerly awaiting “the kick-off heard ‘round the world” when the World Cup™ final competition began in Johannesburg, South Africa, on June 11.
Aside from superstars, red cards, penalty kicks and fake dives, fans saw… a lot of plastic. In fact, plastics play many important roles in the modern soccer game.
Protection
Shin guards are one of the few pieces of protective gear that players are allowed to wear on the soccer field. Players formerly relied on extra pairs of socks, shin guards with wooden slats or nothing at all, but today plastic shin guards rule the game. The latest innovation? Plastic guards that incorporate air cells to help protect players’ legs from errant cleats and soccer balls that reach speeds up to 60 miles per hour.
Gear
Modern plastics have transformed soccer uniforms and gloves.
Players and referees alike wear durable, tear- and fade-resistant uniforms that often are made from polyester (a plastic fiber). This year, the USA team and many other teams wore jerseys made from recycled plastic bottles – and fans also can purchase these jerseys.
And just imagine goalies attempting to block a screaming penalty shot without the innovative gloves that allow for a better grip on the ball, even when it’s wet and slippery. The palms of the gloves often are padded with latex foam that helps absorb the impact from the ball so that the goalie can hang on
Cleats (or Boots)
Without soccer cleats (or boots as they often are called), even the best player would have a tough time maintaining traction on the field. Plastic-based boots are water resistant, durable and easy to clean and care for. And today’s high-tech boots often are made from combinations of advanced plastics that can help improve performance while dramatically reducing weight. For example, adidas® recently introduced the F50 Adizero® , what it claims are the world’s lightest soccer boots, weighing in at a miserly 5.6 ounces. Inspired by cycle racing shoes, the boots’ ultra-light, plastic microfiber upper is attached to a thin, sleek plastic sole, doing away with the stiff, heavy insole of others boots.
The Ball
Even the soccer ball has gone high tech – and plastic. For example, adidas’ Jabulani®(named after the Zulu word for celebration) is made of plastic foam and panels plus a plastic cover that provide exceptional cushioning, durability and feel, to help players achieve maximum control.
The Field
High-tech, soft and durable plastic turf has enabled soccer players to play year-round, even in nasty weather. The most common synthetic turf used in international soccer play is a blend of grass-like, plastic fibers. This plastic turf can conserve water and requires less maintenance than grass. It also reduces irrigation runoff and eliminates green waste such as lawn clippings.
The Goal
Professional soccer goal netting often is constructed of high-tenacity polypropylene, similar to mountain climbing rope, that provides tremendous strength and lasts a very long time.
The Seats
Fans watched the action sitting on the “FRITZ dein Sitz,” a comfy seat cushion from BASF made with expanded polystyrene (plastic) foam. And get this — flip it over and it doubles as a beverage tray!
The Host Country
Ready to make some noise? 2010 was the year of the “vuvuzela” – a plastic horn that is hugely popular among South African soccer fans. Originally made from the kudu antelope horn, today’s plastic versions have become an emblem of hope and unity for many South Africans.

I was most surprised that the uniforms are made with plastic fibers. It’s hard to imagine a world without plastic!
I was really surprised to learn that the soccer jerseys are made from recycled plastic. And I had no idea that the ball had plastic in it either. This year I’m rooting for the U.S. to wind the World Cup.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOO Brazil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Brazil!!!!!!!!!I never knew that jerseys were made of plastic.
I was most surprised about the field being made of plastics. I am supporting Germany this world cup! Go Deutschland!
The “vuvuzela” has been my biggest surprise in this World Cup. The sound from these horns seem to be non-stop at the games I’ve watched so far.
As for teams, I’m supporting Greece, however I was very disappointed in their play Saturday. If Greece gets eliminated, I’ll support Germany.
I was suprised how shin guards are made from plastic because they could break and seriously hurt the player. Mine broke in half from a girl kicking it and i almost got seriously injured.GO USA
I just now learned that the jerseys and Soccer balls were made from plastic and my 2 daughters have been playing for 5+ years.I was completely and utterly surprised except I already knew about the field being either all or partly plastic. My whole family and i are voting for USA!
Recycled jersey’s? SICK!(The good kind) Send me 11 USA jersey’s and you are being 10 times more environmentally responsible.
I was really surpised that the ball was made of plastic because i always thought it was made more like a rubber type, This Year im rooting for BRAZILL!!!! to WIN the World Cup!
What surprised me the most was that some cleats are made frome plastic which makes them waterproof! I am rooting for USA:)#11 Tim Howard:)
I’ve been playing soccer since I was 4. Now I am 15 and I love it. I did not know that the ball was made of plastic or the jersey’s either. I am rooting for USA !!
In a house divided (USA/England), we wil be watching ALL of the games! Without plastic, the lovely “swarm of bees” of the vuvuzela would not be heard! LOL! In all seriousness, I do like that the uniforms are made from recycled plastic. That is so cool!
Didn’t know the foam seats from BASF had cup holders when you turn them upsdie down. Wonder how many folks will sit on the wrong side and either spill their drinks or have little cup holder depressions in their shorts ??:)
I’d have to say the most interesting and surprising part of the use of plastic is the use as a field agent in the turf. I’m looking for the Italians to win it all.
I like the concept used for the making the shin guards more comfortable and protective. Go Team USA!
I thought it was interesting that the seats could double as a beverage tray! GO USA!!!
I didn’t realize they were playing on a plastic field! Go USA!
that is awesome i literally did not know that their uniforms were made out of plastic it is just such a really unusual thing…… it also is good because for the enviroment
I much prefer informative articles like this to that high brow litertaure.
HONDURAS! HONDURAS!
Wow..I am very surprised that the jerseys and the goaliee gloves have plastic in them. I think it’s awesome that the jerseys are made from recycled plastic. And i would never though the ball had plastic in it, we bought 2 of them today size 1 and size 5 :) My 3 month old has actually been watching whole World Cup games :) We are HONDURAS!!!!! all the way, we will all be watching the game with our jerseys on :D
Amazing!!! how the plastic industry has gone taking place in our society and now in soccer and many other sport activities, I can just say WOW with caps, all my life thought the ball and gloves were made with leather, but now even the turf and the uniforms…incredible technoly we have…this year will be rooting for Germany, just to be neutral, in my house we’re mom mexican and Dad American…and I’m half German so…:)
I did not know that the jerseys were made with plastic, and I even played soccer! I am supporting the U.S.A. no matter what!
Unparalleled accuracy, unequivocal clarity, and udennailbe importance!
I was surprised to hear that the new Adidas shoes weighs “a miserly 5.6 ounces”. This will be like playing barefoot.
I will be cheering for the USA. The games have been exciting!
I never thought about the turf being made of plastic.. even though I should have known that. And the uniform amazed me…and to think I wash those things a couple times a week… and never realized! Got to go USA all the way!!!
interesting article man i would lov those adidas cleats :)i could just i couldnt imagine a world with out plastic ha ha :)
I’ve been playing soccer for 8 years and never knew that the jerseys were made out of plastic (seems the whole world revolves around it haha) im cheering for USA!!! USA all the way baby!!!!:)
I was REALLY suprised that goalie nets are made out of plastic….i always thought it was rope!! Me and my daughter are cheering for New Zealand!! Even though they will most likely lose on thursday…
A plastic field! That’s weird, but cool!
Goo U.S.A!
I am surprised of how much of soccer things consist of plastic.
I knew that turf was less maintenance, but I was not aware that it was better for water run-off. That is excellent. I already knew that shin guards were made of plastic since I’m a soccer player myself and the players definitely need to wear them because our shins are actually quite delicate and must be protected.
My favorite team is Italy but perhaps Argentina will win.
Of course! Plastic. I know many times I have been thankful for the plastic protection in the shin guards as a former player myself, however I am most impressed with the “Vuvuzela” this year. Even plastic for the fans, what a way to be apart of your favorite team. The kudu antelope horn was this famous south African inspiration that continues to carry on a symbolic gesture of hope and unity, even outside SA. That is truly awesome.
The vuvuzelas have been the star of this World Cup! Thank you plastics and GO England!
I was most surprised to find out that the jerseys being used were made from recycled plastic bottles. That was something I never would have imagined. Mexicooooo All The Wayyy!!
Thats awsome that the jerseys are made of recycled bottles . USA ALL THE WAY !
I had no idea that the jerseys were made with plastic. I’m cheering for the ITALIANS!! to win the world cup again.
Wow…how awesome is that! I thoroughly enjoyed this article. Go USA…what a superb goal today!!! Go Donavan!
That is so cool that you can turn plastic water bottles into soccer jerseys. It’s probably because both the bottles and the regular jerseys are oil based but still, it’s a great way to keep the bottles out of the landfill! And it’s even better that the US is setting an example by wearing these awesome jerseys! USA ALL THE WAY!
The jerseys are recycled plastic? Wow!
A lot of the things in this article were new to me. i did not know that literally everything that is used in order to play such as cleats, clothing, the field, the net, gloves, and the ball all have plastic forms in it. i was also very surprised to find out that a ball can go up to 60 miles per hour. this article is very interesting and GO USA!!
I was mostly suprised that the jerseys were made of recycled plastic! That is so cool! And go USA!
Woah the grass is plastic? And it can absorb water? Go Brazil!
Reusable anything, and I’m itryng to eliminate plastics where I can. I use butcher paper or waxed paper bags for food storage, glass jars for pantry storage of rice, popcorn, and so forth. I buy locally if it’s available locally and ask if I can do without when it’s not.
I knew there was plastic in a lot of those things already but the jerseys??? Too cool. My 6mo old daughter Milan (yeah she was named after AC Milan…her dad is a HUGE soccer fan) loves playing with the plastic vuvuzela we have here at the house!!!! GO MEXICO…… WIN TOMORROW!!!!!
It is great that in one of the most played sports in the Word, plastic has made a difference.
I never knew that jerseys were made out of plastic recycled bottles. That is a really good way to stay green! I always thought that they were made out of a very special cloth. Looks like you learn something knew everyday! :)
ME AND MY SON WERE ROOTING FOR ENGLAND TO WIN :/ THERE IS ALWAYS NEXT TIME!!! I think its really great how they are finding so many ways to recycle and make the world a better place in 1 way at least, we still can’t change people lol. I didn’t even know it was possible to use plastic in making clothes that is really, really cool.
i didn’t know that the jerseys were made from plastic until i looked it up and it said they were and im rooting for the U.S
It is amazing how much plastic is used in! I like the idea, as for myself I also work at a Recycling Job and love everything to help the environment! I have to say without it my life could be miserable ie: my husband at 43 still plays soccer and is a goalie, so “Thank God” for the plastic in goalie gloves! My daughter has played all her life and WoW “Thank Goodness” for shin guards she has taken some knocks! Lastly my family loves soccer so much that they have gotten me to play at 43 years old, and boy do i need the protection!
As far as the team we want to win, well we started with USA & England, now we are going for the Netherlands. To us it really doesn’t matter who wins we absolutely just love watching all the games! Some day in America we hope people will love it as much as us!
Plastic in the soccer ball will help air time, angles, speed, its genius. I love this. Very economical as well. I would really like a Cristiano Ronaldo Jersey please.
I found it crazy all of the things that plastic were involved in. My daughter is the biggest fan of soccer that I have ever known to love, and watching how in-to the games played in South Africa she is, I can see how it is strengthening her mentally when she plays on the field.
She is one of those teens who try to do everything for the environment like, recycling, reusing, picking up litter, and she also doesn’t drive as much because it harms the earth. But I think that soccer is the most important thing to her, and since she is so passionate about soccer, she would be okay that we use that much plastic because it is helping to protect her from injuries.
The environment and soccer are 2 of the most important things to her in the world, and I know she would do anything for them.
Shes also rooting for PORTUGAL! She just loves the way that there team plays not only as a team, but like they are a family.
I love the fact that the jersey’s for the US team are made out of recycled plastics. Not only are they representing our country on the field but they are representing our country and our dedication to our planet. My three children play soccer at varying levels and it is nice to know they are protected. From shin guards to the goalie gloves that not only help my sons grasp but also protect his young hands. Also… Go Team USA!!
wow.. amazing that most everything involved with soccer is some derivative of plastic. Now I know my recycling efforts aren’t going to waste! I hope that it means a better future for all the world. We were cheering for Italy .. but unfortunately they are out at this point.. so.. GOOOO Germany!!!
When i was reading the article i misunderstood… now that i know that it is RECYCLED plastic, i understand that it is good and that we are living in an environment that really cares!
Ok, the ball and the field using plastic was a surprise.
As an active recycling family, this pleases me. My 7 y/o soccer girl is a total recycler already. So the World Cup is incorporating things that are important for the Earth and for the future of our children. Soccer is awesome!
I like reading your blog for the reason that you can always get us new and awesome things, I feel that I should at least say a thank you for your hard work.
